A 1988 class ring belonging to one Troy Hailey is retrieved from the stomach contents of a John Doe found murdered outside Grand Central Station in New York City. Detective Rosemary Cooper travels upstate to the small town located on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River to investigate.
When Coop steps through the door of the 24 hour JAVA Diner, she finds she has traveled back in time to when the Andrew sisters sang “Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree,” and the Hailey Comment headline proclaims GERMAN U-BOATS SPOTTED IN OUR BACKYARD.
Since neither she nor Troy Hailey had as yet been born in 1942, Coop is baffled as to why her Predestination Causality Loop has zapped her back to this time, this place? That is until she overhears the locals discussing how to “get rid of the Krauts” living in their midst. Most vocal is the town’s founder, Tobias Hailey, and a young Frank Cooper, who is destined to become her father.
Has she traveled back in time to intervene, keeping her father from participating in the plot to kill innocent people, thus paving the way for him to fulfill his destiny, not only as her father, but as a U.S. Congressman? Or is there a more ominous reason for her sojourn into the past? Is John Doe’s killer among the residents of Hailey? Has she been sent here to manipulate events somehow preventing his murder in 2008?

"Poorly written" does not even begin to describe this book, which quite obviously never saw the glance of even a careless editor. When I discovered the third sentence of the Foreword to be incorrectly punctuated, I gave it a pass; it was an awkward construction, I thought, but not absolutely incorrect. A few sentences later, another grammatical error occurred, and I wasn't even done with the Foreword yet. I proceeded to the Prologue (and never before have I read a book with both a Foreword and a Prologue), and found myself highlighting multiple careless errors in punctuation, grammar, and sentence construction. Always a masochist, I plowed gamely on. The writing grew no better, the story grew ever more confusing, and by Location 109 on the Kindle, I gave up. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It mystery kept me going all the way to the end with some twists and turns along the way. I would have liked a little more time travel/ supernatural injected into the story tho. I do plan to read more ROSEMARY COOPER TIME TRAVEL mysteries.
This is relating to time travel and the subject has fascinated me for many years so I loved this book.
Interesting enough for a first read, but not worth re-reading. I read it less than a month ago, and I have already forgotten most of the plot, so that tells me something.
1st time reviewing a book. But this was a good read and one of few books that I've read in just one sitting. I just could not find a good stopping point. I had to keep reading to see what came next and how the story would resolve. I've just purchased the next in the series but I'll save for a weekend. Very good blend of my favorite types of fiction - scifi/time travel and mystery/detective.
